Therefore, you should buy weather-resistant lumber, such as pine or cedar. Always take accurate measurements before adjusting the size of the components at the proper size. Drill pilot holes trough the components before inserting the wood screws, to prevent the wood from splitting.

The first step of the project is to build the top frame for the workbench. Cut the components from 2x4s at the dimensions shown in the diagram.

Align the edges flush and make sure the corners are square. Continue the project by assembling the legs. Next, attach the legs to the top frame. Make sure the legs are plumb and check if the corners are square.

Assemble the workbench on a level surface. Fit the supports to the base of the workbench, as shown in the plans.

2x4 basics bench

Simple Workbench made from 2x4s Plans. Cancel reply.Although fairly basic compared to other projects on here, I'd really appreciate a vote or two in the contests if you liked this instructable! Thanks in advance! For me to invest money in a project it needs to be something I consider worthwhile, and this workbench is exactly that.

If you are interested in learning how to make an attractive bench on the cheap, with not all the normally required tools, then I recommend taking a look at my build videos. I've also broken down most parts into steps in this instructable with a little write up explaining why I selected certain methods or processes as well. You may also want to hit subscribe on my youtube channel as well, I release new videos every couple of weeks.

I knew the hardest part of the build would be the slab. Of course there are many ways to skin a cat, and once I thought up this method I managed to convince myself that it would be successful.

It would have turned out perfectly had I had dryer wood I think. The wet wood was very hard to cut, even when I was just trimming a small amount off. The blade would be forced to the side in some cases, resulting in a not exact 90 degree face. The few gaps I have in the slab are because of the wood not being cut at a perfect 90 degrees. I would use the same method, but refine it. I would use more than 3 screws per length for a start, though 5 would certainly be enough.

A planer would be better than using the table saw to flatten one side, but the table saw method did work. I would probably try to find dryer stock, the wood I used was quite wet and hard to cut. I really wanted to make my own bench with big beautiful tenons popping through the slab. When using standard structural timber like this, that is probably an unrealistic expectation.

And of course, I am not highly skilled in building like this, many people would be able to do a better job than I did even with pine. Hand chopping was a poor idea for someone of my skill level. While the jigsaw worked, I feel it was a poor choice for the job.

I really should have spent time sharpening my chisels as well, but I am learning from my mistakes now. I would use a different method completely. I would probably create a jig to use a router to cut out a nice sharp, well defined mortise, and only chisel the parts the router could not reach. This would result in a much nicer and more repeatable mortise.Just add 2x4 and 2x Quick View.

I built mine so it would be just under 3' high and 5' long with a 2' wide top. I needed a total of 2x4's. It's always nice to have a few to spare. Hardware: 3. Step 1: Rip all lumber so your 2X4's will have a final dimension of 1. Easier way to complete task is to first set your fence to 3. Now, reposition fence to 3" and now rip other side of all. This gives you a nice flat, square top to work on. Step 2: Position all the boards you will need to achieve your top width square and flat take a board perpendicular to and butt up all boards needing to be cut.

Clamp on a guide fence and cross cut all of them with your circular saw to length. You will cut to final length at a later step. Step 3: Preparing top for catch all "cubby hole" optional If you have to have a "cubby hole" you need to dadoe out " of material anywhere from " deep. It's absolutely critical you take your time here and you measure three times and cut once. I centered mine lengthwise and one board in from edge. Refer to picture 3. Note: I do enjoy this feature, however I sometimes find it as a catch all and hard to keep organized.

Step 4: Now it is finally time for glue up. If your total top width is over 12" or so, I would strongly suggest to glue your top in two sections and then glue them together as I did. I also want to state, I did this glue up untraditionally, but for my purpose it has served extremely well. For each board I glued together, I screwed in 2.

Warning: Make sure you remember to leave room for your legs tenon to come through your table top mortise. The best way for this is to have a scrap board for a spacer. I took my hand plane and belt sander to square up stock before joining the two halves. Once joined, repeat planing and sanding to achieve a nice flat working surface.

Now, cut top to final length.I bought these legs to build a workbench in my workshop. I was able to build my bench in about 3 hours including staining the top. I used 5 2x4s including the cross brace. My bench is 25 inches x 74 inches. Easy to build and very solid work bench. I built two and added a vice, press and pegboard back in about 4 hours. The packaging was not good at all. It was all beat up and had opened up and was re taped.

The stew package was missing. Luckily I had screws to assemble it. I'm an amateur, but this was a fun project--Good instructions, well designed legs. I built a 5' x 2' bench with lower shelves 1' deep to allow for a stool to go underneath. Also put casters on the legs to allow the bench to roll. I never write reviews, but I would recommend this to a friend and buy again if I need another bench. I highly recommend this kit!

I made a router table with my kit. The screws were included. I will purchase another soon for another project.

The shelves should be inserted before you put the legs on because the legs are wide at the top and middle. Good product, was as advertised.

With my own wood, used the legs from the kit and have a great work area for my garage. Made mine a full 4' x 8'. Easy to assemble.

Seems to be very sturdy. Needed a work bench for reloading ammo. This item worked out perfectly for my needs. Follow the directions, have sheets cut at Home Depot to size needed and you're off to the races. Construction is very sturdy. All fasteners needed are included and directions are clear. Price is right, all-in-all, great buy. The Basics Work Bench is a great product that helps you put together a custom fit work bench to fit the area and size needed, I only needed it 5 ft wide 60 inches and just 18 inches deep on the top.

With a little planning and trial and error I got it to fit exactly. The instructions could be much better with larger diagram and better explanation about what width to cut the side supports.
